Article: Why should I Promote My Song on Blogs?

On this topic I think I need to grab a cup of coffee and seat by the window side for fresh air. Over time I have heard a lot of artistes say, I don’t need blogs. Infact some blogs don’t have traffic so i’d rather just put out a write up on an audio upload link and share with my friends. Blogs don’t give the results needed. Let me take a sip….

Just incase most of us don’t know, let me quickly educate you. Blogs play a major role in your career as an artiste.  As an artiste you need to reach as many blogs as possible. It is one of the most efficient and effective ways to grow your brand online.

Some years back gospel contents were relatively available online. Precisely, some of the blogs today started about 7-8years ago bringing you all the gospel contents today and so far have contributed to the growth of gospel music in Nigeria. Just as you are here today downloading new music and reading this post on this blog, you wont have had the opportunity to do so if it wasn’t birthed many years ago. This blog has promoted many artistes like Samsong, Steve Crown, Aghogho, Elijah Oyelade, Prospa Ochimana, Mr. Kee and too many names to mention.

Let’s quickly define what a blog is?
According to the dictionary, a blog is a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

There are different kinds of blogs but today our focus is on music blog. Every blog attracts visitors on a daily basis from across the world. This is what we term web traffic. Some enjoy huge visits while others have less. But most importantly every blog has her audience.

Owners of blogs are called bloggers. Bloggers consistently update their website where information is provided in chronological order and more recent posts appear on top.
Most of the gospel blogs are content based: Video blogs (vlog), audio (song of the day), interviews, reviews.

Now that we have defined a blog, why should you as an artiste promote your song on blogs or send your new releases to bloggers?

I have heard several times, where artistes expect a blogger to do some magic by getting their content to every everywhere. It’s not possible. What blogs will do for you is totally dependent on how good your song to be featured is. When you have good content blogs give you;

1. Builds your Exposure to a large audience: as your song gets on the blogs, you get an automatic exposure to thousands of people visiting each blog. As earlier stated some blogs have huge followership while others have less. Regardless, your content has reached thousands and millions with the speed of light. With this exposure, fans get to know about your content and will search for more contents if you have them online. As you get to reach new audiences, you also make new fans.

2. Knowledge: Many artistes don’t have their info out there for fans to read and know more about them. With your new song, interviews, and bios available on blogs, they get to have more knowledge about you; what you do, future projects and all. Blogs provide new and existing fans with a sound knowledge of who you are and what you stand for.

3. Content: As an artiste, every material you release is first a content for the blogs. They want to have their platform updated on a daily basis. As much as this is important to them, its totally different from enjoying some promotional packages which will be paid for. As a newcomer you will spend a lot to get the required exposure even if you are giving them content.

4. Shelf Life: Many artistes have asked me, how long will my song be available on your blog? I most times try not to laugh because it’s not their fault, they seek knowledge. Every song uploaded to a blog will be there for as long as you can imagine except in a situation where the blog crashes. Shelf life is simply the duration for which your content is available and accessible to others who may not have accessed it earlier on. Who knows, new fans may just be randomly searching and will find the content useful. Most times ‘big’songs are not songs released in the current year but one left in an archive and picked by someone and boom! it gets all the attention.

How to find blogs to promote your records.

This is probably one of the major tasks an artiste will have to embark on. With new blogs springing up on a daily basis and contending for whose content to jump on, remember that beyond posting and reviewing your content, there is more to getting your content seen. There are a lot of blogs, you have to start first by searching google to find which fits your kind of music. Are your favourites on the listed sites? Precisely artistes doing your genre of music? As a Christian artiste I think access to all gospel blogs is a good one for you or to as much as you can get on. Most blogs run PR services where they distribute songs to partner blogs but permit me to sound this as a warning,so you know right on time. There are a lot of peeps posing as bloggers but are scammers. Ensure you do your due diligence before you embark on any special PR service.

Secondly, find out submission guidelines to blogs and follow their instruction. While you get your song submitted if you get published don’t make a mistake of trying to give a particular platform more priority. Be glad your content got featured and use all blogs in your public push. Share all the links. If you have a website be kind to make posts showing platforms your song got featured in. Don’t forget you might have need for them again and in no distant time. Every blog has specific requirements so ensure you follow same.

If you can write a proper press release please get a professional to write one for you. I have encountered many artistes saying they don’t know what a press release is and are unwilling to get a pro to write one. Truth is most of the bloggers are busy and don’t have time to write about someone they know nothing about.
