ARTICLE: CREATIVITY AND THE ILLS IN GOSPEL MUSIC/CHURCH by Babatope Adefunmilayo

This is one of those articles that you’d assume as “table shaking”, a lingua commonly used in Nigeria to simply say ‘one is about to step on toes touching on matters that could be classified as grey area’ but the intent here is neither that of table shaking nor an attempt to get at anyone, rather it should be best seen as a call to reflection expected to instigate action.

What action? you may want to askand the answer is simple – return to the manual {in this case the bible} where we are admonished to speak to ourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in our hearts to the Lord {Ephesians 5:19 KJV}. I must warn you too that it’s going to be a long read, my hope is it will be worth your time.

The impact of music or its importance to the church cannot be over emphasized in that it unites the people as well as aiding expression of different feelings, thoughts and imagination to God. Just like football,music is a universal language devoid of race, age, ethnic, gender or status barrier in today’s world, and whilst music carries this much power in today’s church especially when it’s creatively and excellently crafted, it is just one of the mediums to express worship. Safe to say music itself isn’t what makes our worship but the content and intent of same.

The music arena today is fast becoming choked so much so it requires a high level of excellence in creativity, production and delivery to stand out from the pack and this is no different with church or gospel music. At this point, one must salute every gospel singer/minister who has been taking time to write, sing and produce quality music content. The quality of content being churn out from the Nigerian gospel music community presently makes one proud especially with the global acceptance some of the indigenous songs and their authors are getting, on behalf of Nigerians I want to say “we are proud of all our creatives in the gospel music community”.

There were times our indigenous gospel singers yearned so much for global acceptance as well as collaborations with their counterparts described as “international artistes”, nowadays, it’s different as we have these international artistes not only singing Nigerian gospel songs but also desiring collaborations. Some of these collaborations are happening already.

“Our God deserves the best” is a common statement amongst the church folks and even the bible recognized the place of skills. The story of Saul in 1 Samuel 16:14-23. The passage captured the account of Saul being tormented by evil spirit and his servants recommended music as remedy, but they were specific with their recommendation – “let our lord now command your servants here before you to find a man who plays skillfully on the lyre; and when the evil spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well” [vs 16 AMP]

I can literally feel you nodding your head saying “that’s what I’m talking about”, but hold on a second. The recommendation of Saul’s servants made sense to him, as expected, anything that will save him from the torment is welcome so, he gave the order – “find me someone who plays well and bring him here”. And a servant responded “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who plays skillfully, a valiant man, a man of war, prudent in speech and eloquent, an attractive person; and the Lord is with him”[vs18 AMP].

Notice the underlined phrase?What that connotes is that it wasn’t just about the skill, [another translation of the bible described him as an excellent musician] there were other attributes but, the one that was a remedy to Saul’s problem is the Lord being with this Jesse’s son. If you backtrack a bit to verse 13 of the passage, you’d realize David had been anointed by Samuel and it was recorded that the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him from then onwards.

The issue with creativity not properly channeled as far as church/gospel music is concerned is the risk of importing materials from secular music into the church and the unsuspecting congregation will receive it because of their trust in you.

In today’s church, this importation includes dance steps, instrumentation, lifting songs and substituting lyrics with God, Jesus, the blood etc., meanwhile someone once said “that a song has Jesus in it doesn’t make it spiritual”and that’s not far from the truth. The one that seem to top the importation list currently is the use of secular slangs by music “ministers” during their sessions in churches.

How did I get here? I came across a video on YouTube as is my habit to randomly visit YouTube just so I can be blessed by other people’s gifts/ministry,learn other ways of doing music, perhaps new songsas well [yeah, I forgot to mention that I do music amongst other things]. Whilst on YouTube, this video pop up and I saw this well-known “minister”singing in a popular church with a strong youth and young adult base in Nigeria, I clicked to launch open the video and I must say the music great but filled with imports from secular music.

I honestly couldn’t watch the entire length of the video because a battle of thoughts began immediately. I couldn’t hold it in all by myself so, that evening I wrote on my WhatsApp status asking if one of the many slangs I heard in the video was now acceptable in church during our praise sessions. The responses that flooded my phone the next morning was unbelievable and I’d be sharing a lot of them in this article.

However, I realized from those responses that no one within the church community wasspared of the blame. Therefore, to answer the who is to blame question, this article from this point will be broken into different categories involved in this current epidemic, the music ministers, the pastors and the congregation.

THE MUSIC MINISTERS

The commandment or assignment of worship is first to every child of God because that’s the essence for which we were made, “This people have I formed for myself they shall showforth my praise” [Isaiah 43:21 KJV]. Music is one of the tools to express our worship but not everyone is gifted in the area of singing or playing musical instruments which is where these set of people come in handy. “And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endurethforever”[2Chronicles 20:21 KJV]

The commandment on the object of our worship is clear, God. “For thou shall worship no other god; for the LORD, whose name is Jealous; is a jealous God”[Exodus34:14 KJV]

“Ohworship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; fear beforehim, all the earth” [Psalm 96:9 KJV]

Deduce from the scriptures above that praise and/or worship is to be directed to God only and what that suggests is, any lyrics or music that forms the content of our praise and/or worship repertoire not pointing towards God no matter how excellently done is at best sweet music.

Now, as people appointed to lead the congregation in sessions of cooperate praise and/or worship, an appointment that is as a result of your gifts of music, perhaps “calling” into the ministry of Christian music like some like to call it,you need to understand the level of trust that has been placed on you from both the church leaders and the congregation. This trust makes them accept what you bring whilst you’re in front/on stage or the altar leading them in songs.

Whereas some will scrutinize what you’re dishing out in line with their understanding of what praise and/or worship is about, there are other unsuspecting members of the congregation who just take it hook line and sinker after all it is coming from their trusted praise leader.

Betraying that trust is terrible and it’s sad how bad this has gotten presently with the level of secularism being imported into the church under the guise of creativity. Some music “ministers” have now left the place of being like their Father [God] as creators to becoming imitators. Do not get me wrong, there is nothing wrong in copying what is good and improving on it even the scriptures says “but covet earnestly the best gifts” [1Corinthians 12 :31a KJV], the latter part of the verse reads “and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way” [1Corinthians 12:31b].Therefore, the issue being dealt with in this article is the imitation of secularism directly into the church.

How we have gone from speaking to yourselves with hymns, psalms and spiritual songs to the use of slangs created by secular artistes is unbelievable, and to what end? We are now excellent at exciting the people with sweet music and leaving them to go back same way they came or worse. How do we make them leave worse than they came? Well, every sound carries a spirit and it’s either the Spirit of God or not, there is no in between so you would have successfully impacted them with the spirit behind the secular song you imported.

You may want to argue that the creators of these slangs were also giving the gifts of music by God, whilst I agree with that, I’d also want to put to you that God can give you the gift, but you decide how you want to make use of it. Do not forget also that lucifer was excellent in music before he was banished from heaven.

At this point let me insert some of the comments I got from people in the Christian community about this current epidemic;

“we can’t say we have the mind of Christ and be taking cues from the world”

“the church has mixed with the world; the world has gained access into the church”

“it doesn’t matter is one of the statements that has brought us to this point”

“the junk we bring into the church”

The fact that some of us think members of the church community won’t know when we come up with this fusion/importation is laughable, perhaps because we think they are not musically knowledgeable or that they don’t know these secular songs. Unfortunately, there are church folks who are familiar with these secular songs/slangs, their minds would shift from whatever your coined lyrics are to the original for some seconds. Are we to excuse them? of course not, however, what they listen to or watch outside of church can’t be controlled by anyone but themselves. The inexcusable thing here is you who has been trusted to lead in the right direction found doing the opposite, you are expected to know better.

Whilst some members of the church community think the quest for fame is responsible for this epidemic, some others disagree. For them it’s that the gospel music singers caught in this web have lost touch with the Holy Spirit as a result, get their inspiration from the secular music community. Here are a few comments;

“all of them are looking for cheap fame”

“I think it’s beyond cheap fame. The person who came up with those slangs is already famous for his music. The minister using the same word is just plain out losing touch. The Holy spirit can’t put those words in their mouth”

“some things just don’t make sense, the fact that secular world does them doesn’t mean they are right, edifying and good for the church. We don’t have to copy all things so we can feel among, it smacks of foolishness”

“there’s just a way the Holy Spirit controls you that some slangs won’t even cross your mind”

Let’s pause at this point [selah, like the bible puts it] and think about the last comment. If the Holy Spirit would control you such that some slangs won’t cross your mind, would it be that you have the slangs stored up already but your relationship with the Holy Spirit makes him stop the slangs from crossing your mind during your sessions or that your mind cannot admit the slangs in the first instance because of your relationship with the Holy Spirit?

The question therefore is whether or not there is a relationship between gospel music singers and the Holy Spirit who the bible refers to as our guide; “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth” [John 16:13a KJV]. If there is that relationship, do they depend on him for inspiration?

Another sets of comments;

“I think the problem is with consecration, lack of which is causing lots of impurities”

“a lot of ministers have missed it from the onset, they don’t even have a worship altar, they now come with just skill and desire to ‘blow’ [become successful as musicians]”

“no relationship with God, in fact their skill is louder than the God they proclaim”

This particular comment caught my attention;

“the bible is clear on so many things, most of the people importing this secular songs and slangs are not ignorant of their actions neither are they doing it for cheap fame, it is war. There is a lot of corruption and pollution of the mind going on, Satan has corrupted their minds, unfortunately the corruption is laced with deception so much these people still think all they are doing is for Christ.

Now they contribute their own quota in corrupting the soul of the people, subtle yet effective, leading people through door with dead ends”

Let’s have another selah moment as that comment got me thinking and asking rhetorical questions – Could Satan be using a gospel music minister without their knowledge? Could they really be double agents unknowingly? What are the chances they do not think they are doing anything wrong especially with multiple invitations coming with fat honorariums? Afterall these invitations shouldn’t be coming if they aren’t delivering value. From whom does the invitations come you ask, pastors or church leaders of course.

I think it’s a good place to move to the second category of contributors to the epidemic.

 

THE PASTORS

Pastors? What’s their business in all of these? Well, I thought so too, after all, they have their own job description which is to shepherd the flock, nurture and lead as they are being led by the Holy Spirit. Butyes, they are not exonerated from the blame.

Back to how we got here, the video that instigated this article. In that video, the pastor was seen having a really good time of “praise and worship”. One could easily tell judging from the smiles on his face and the intensity of his dance. He must have learnt some new dance moves introduced to him by the team leading the session as he was seen choreographing with them at some point. In fairness to him, he possibly doesn’t have an idea of any secularism infused into the entire music during the session, all he was most likely concerned about was thanking God for the year 2022.

However, my little worry on his part was whether or not he paid attention to some of the slangs and words that made up the content of the music during the praise session and this question goes to all pastors who have had some of these ‘ministers’ grace their altars at different times.

Do pastors check for the content of these singers before invitations are extended or they just take recommendations as they come? There used to be a time when we heard guest music ministers are prayerfully selected, are we still in that era or things have changed?

Let me slot this in here, I also serve with a gospel music minister who can be described as an A-list in Nigeria [ A-list is just a manmade nomenclature used to describe class or category within the music community] and the nature of my responsibility includes handling his bookings amongst other things. One of things that amazes me is receiving phone calls from churches intending to book him for their programs and for example three churches will tell me “they prayed and God led them to invite him”. Why should that amaze me I hear you asking, check this out; three churches, three states, same date, now I wonder if God authors such confusion. After a period of time, I realized the “God told us to invite him” was to these people what an earthworm fixed unto a fishing hook is to someone fishing in a river, and they use it to mount pressure on me so they can get a yes to their invitation so I also came up with an answer; “that’s good to know, tell God to speak to the minister too, that will make it easy to get a quick answer for you”.

My experience working with the music minister opened my eyes to the fact that a lot of churches come after the gospel artists/ministers who seem to be the rave of the moment especially the ones who have songs enjoying high acceptability globally. I could write a book on the things I hear from pastors and church representatives during booking phone conversations to make a good case for their invitationsbut that’s not the focus here, it’s just to buttress fact that not all invitations coming from pastors or church leaders are God-led.

A music minister who pleaded anonymity said to me “these days some pastors just want an artist who can put bomb on the seats” when I asked him to break that down, he said “pastors just want an artiste that will first of all pull crowd to their events as well as make the people jump and shout”.

Let’s examine some comments;

“we are beginning to embrace the world; ministry is missing and nobody is paying attention anymore. Even pastors are just interested in having crowd so no time to school young ministers”

“Some church leaders just want artistes that can make their congregation jump and shout”

“What’s the goal of the pastors when they gather people for programs?”

“My brother told me their youth coordinator/pastor said the youth choir should compose a “Christian song” using Asake’s beat [Asake is a secular/hip hop artist in Nigeria] so that the youths can vibe well with it. when he told me, I was weak”.

Truth of the matter is that the artistes/music ministers don’t bring themselves to the church, they are invited and someone or a group of people are responsible for that decision, the event committee [which would have at least one pastoral oversight] or the senior pastor who ultimately approves, therefore this secularism eyesore under the guise of creativity in our churches may be here for a long time except pastors begin to stop inviting the culprits.

Some pastors have been reported to be found having meetings with their music unit after their invited guests’sessions to ask their music team to emulate the “creativity” and vibes, noting that the congregation were in high spirits during the session. So, you wonder, if the pastor doesn’t see anything wrong with the guests’ content, how can the music director or worship team to say otherwise.

These congregation members too have their share of the blame, in case any of them is reading and so far, nodding in agreement saying in your mind – tell them, well you’re next.

 

THE CONGREGATION.

When you go to any Christian gathering for a service/program, what are your expectations, what aspect of the service do you usually look forward to? Praise and worship sessions may top the list if a survey is carried outwhich is expected, no thanks to the power of music as a tool to express worship. The question is, what’s your understanding of the concept of praise and worship?

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship him”

“God is a Spirit; and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” [John 4:23-24 KJV]

Another question is whether or not you come as a true worshipper who understand God being a Spirit and how He should be worshipped because these “creative singers” come to lead you the congregation and you also reciprocate the energy which in turn motivate them to give you more.

It’s quite easy for you to return the energy because you are also familiar with the secular songs that the singers come with after they have replaced the lyrics with a sprinkle of God/Jesus/blood here and there.

Some of you have your “faves” [favorite] among the secular artistes so much you engage in bants and arguments on social media fighting for your faves. Some of you can skip church service to attend the concerts of your secular faves where you will be found crying whilst they perform on stage and then you will still cry in church during worship. Little wonder you respond with loud ovation when you hear the secular slangs or beat that you’re familiar with when infused during praise and worship, for you it’s just about the vibes, nothing serious, after all God sees your heart, He knows you’re praising Him.

Let us see some comments;

“the larger part of the congregation come for the excitement rather than transformation, the music ‘minister’ sees that and give it to them”

“and the so-called congregation would always yearn for such people to lead praise in church”

“those of us who are sane as music ministers are not celebrated; the ones trying to be yoked and misbehaving are the ones the church now celebrates” [you can tell this was sent by a music minister]

“some church members’ playlists are confusing; see list: DunsinOyekan, Davido, Nathaniel Bassey, Wizkid, Victoria Orenze, Asake, Ekwueme, Burna Boy, etc.”

“it’s just music of excitement, the people who celebrate it are the reason it continues”

“Yes, we have become insensitive that we are no longer able to discern. Church music is now fusion, we don’t catch spirits anymore enough to be able to even test them”

 

The truth of the matter is that we all know what is right, we have all just decided to do what we want per time just because we enjoy the ‘vibes’ and have fallen in love with it over time. How do I know this? Well, the comments I quoted in this article weren’t fabricated, Christians from different denominations sent them. Except some of us are still under the category “Ye worship ye know not what” [John 4:22 KJV] but like one respondent said, some of you will still not be happy about this article. Here’s how he said it “this same discussion will make some people call you ‘spiricoco’ [too spiritual] or say your own is too much, but we gradually slip into error daily. Little wonder we don’t see too much manifestation of God’s presence like the days of old [Acts of the apostles]”.

Let me add here that I am also a gospel event project manager/producer and director and one of the things I have noticed is that some music ministers don’t get a second invitation to churches where they didn’t “move” the congregation [move in this case being to excite, make to jump and shout] and this perhaps is one of the reasons behind the secularism in the name of creativity.

 

 

 

 

How do we put an end to this epidemic?Everyone has a role to play and this article is intended to explore some of these roles in the very little way it can capture. These roles will be broken down according to the categories involved:

 

MUSIC MINISTERS

We need to return to the real essence of praise and worship where the center-piece is JESUS. However, I won’t also fail to reiterate that a song having Jesus, God, the blood of Jesus etc. as part of its lyrics doesn’t make it a gospel or spiritual song, so there is need for us to be discerning in all of these or we find ourselves moving round a circle.

We need to return to the days of “speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in our hearts to the Lord” {Ephesians 5:19 KJV}.If it’s not pointing to the Lord then it should be avoided at all cost.

Worship is more than a song, “therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your true and proper worship” [Romans 12:1]. The music is not the worship, it’s just a tool of expression in worship therefore, in our quest to make excellent and acceptable music, we shouldn’t lose our worship.

Let’s examine some comments;

“worship is for God; we praise him not ourselves”

“personally, perhaps because of my conservative background, I’m super sensitive to wordings of songs and beats. The moment the beat appears similar to a secular song, all my alarm bells go off”

“there are some songs praise leaders should not sing during praise and worship sessions, some songs are feel-good songs and do not praise God. Except that the church is now tilting towards worldlines and focused on getting the congregation excited”

“whilst music and songs give us a platform to worship, worship is deeper and intense. The moment we understand worship in its truest form, it impacts and directsour music so we know they are just vehicles to convey our worship”

“music is a universal language; worship is a lifestyle that is beyond music. Worship is not a genre; the understanding of these dynamics helps to avoid confusion and in turn helps us know how to approach kingdom music wholly”

“as a music minister, a recording artiste and music producer, I’m of the opinion some things shouldn’t be brought into Yahweh’s presence as praise or worship. It’s time we know our place whether as entertainers or worshippers. Some of us are just desperate to ‘blow’ and as such say or do just anything with our songs”

Let me bring to your attention there are people who regard you as a role model, some even call you mentors though they don’t have direct contact with you [those ones need to know the difference between mentor and role model], but there are some also who are your direct mentees, these sets of people because of their regard for you usually would see all you do as the right thing and would want to replicate. You may want to say “well, I didn’t ask them to follow or copy me”, but the truth is, such followership comes naturally because of the ‘results’ they see you command, the responsibility on you therefore is to acknowledge this and do what is right.

A gospel music minister in Nigeria was once asked how he comes about his songs and lyrics, his response; “I stay”. He went further saying, “I don’t go to God for songs, I long for a time of fellowship with Him, and I stay there in His presence until I have had enough for that moment”. Whilst I’m not trying to make that minister the standard, there is no doubt that the habit of staying in the place of fellowship with the Holy Spirit is a good way to go, as He is the one who can best guide and inspire to do great.

 

PASTORS

“and I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding” [Jeremiah 3:15 KJV]

Church leaders are expected to know better following the scripture referenced above. We may sometimes forget you are human, don’t blame us, rather put the blame on the position you hold and the responsibilities that comes with it.You can’t place seeking artistes who will “set bombs on the seats” above those who will be instrumental to transformation during our Christian gatherings except transforming lives is not one of the goals for the meeting in the first instance.

Not every musician, artist who does good music is worthy of your invitation. Like a respondent said it “evil and corrupting things come well packaged and subtle” so, here’s where discernment of spirit come to play and we your church members put you in that place where we believe you will be more discerning than us as our spiritual leaders. I believe as pastors, you know when a music minister has ‘substance’ like it’s commonly called to mean grace and anointing, that should be placed above who can attract crowd to our events.

Sometimes, it may require you spending some time to visit the YouTube pages of the recommended artistes where you can go through their contents and thereafter make decisions.

 

CONGREGATION

It’s not out of place if we begin to give feedbacks to our pastors about the music ministers invited to our church meetings. Most churches now have various feedback platforms for example, suggestions boxes, emails, perhaps book an appointment to see the pastors in person.

Sometimes we can give instant feedbacks like this respondent; “sometimes I just stare at them so they know what they’re singing is rubbish, I simply stop dancing and singing”. The issue with this kind of feedback however is the pastor taking it as the artist/minister not ‘moving’ the crowd, but I am trying to imagine what it will look like if half of the congregation or the entire church sits whilst the hot ‘creative’ session is live, the pastor may be forced to carry out a survey on the reason for such reaction.

I have seen scenarios where pastors just randomly ask their congregation which music ministers they’d love to see at the church’s proposed event. In this case pastors usually read from a list of names and they will pay attention to the names that gets loudest shouts, perhaps if your pastor adopts this method, don’t shout, perhaps that will make the pastor research on the reason for such cold response.

Whatever method works, get your feedback across by all means.

 

CONCLUSION

“Every song or music generally has a spirit behind it” is a statement I believe is not strange to anyone reading this article. The sounds you allow into your system through your ears as access point comes with a spirit, the question is what kind of spirit do you give this access to?

You may want to argue that not all secular songs are vulgar or unsafe for a Christian, some songs are just inspirational. I am very familiar with that argument but the thing is “all things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient” [1Corinthians 6:12a]

“but whilst men slept; his enemy came and sowed tears among the wheat and went on his way” [Matthew 13:25]

If care not is taken, a little here, a little there, you will find yourself not only listening to more than the inspirational songs but singing them also. It’s amazing how church folks sing secular songs not missing out on any word, some even infuse the mannerism of the artist whilst at it but will be depending on screens in church for lyrics during praise and worship.If you say you can be in control of the kind of songs you listen to, that’s good to know, I will suggest though that you take heed lest you fall.

I know we still have the dichotomy battle of power of choice in that we can choose to listen to the secular songs outside of church, even have them on our music playlist in our gadgets, but not bring them to church during our praise and worship sessions, well, let us start from somewhere which is not infusing them in our church music repertoires.

 

Final sets of comments;

“every song has a spirit behind it, changing the lyrics doesn’t change the spiritual influence behind it. God is an infinite well of music, if one needs a new sound let God be the One to give it. If they like secular song, enjoy it by all means but don’t bring it to God’s altar, you can’t be offering Him what He didn’t give you”

“let’s not forget that entertainment is part of the tapestry but the question now is what is the entertainment that honors God, and brings His presence into the midst of His people? Obviously, it is not as the world does”

There is a need for the Christian/church community to differentiate between Christian musicians/creatives AND gospel music ministers. There are musicians who are Christians and have openly described themselves as inspirational singers and not a ‘gospel minister’ for reason best known to them, such people can be found singing church songs sometimes, does that qualify them to grace our altars? This is another question we need to answer so that way we don’t keep finding ourselves caught in the web of ills caused by creativity in music. Inspirational songs aren’t bad, but as the scripture records that there is time for everything under the sun, I think in this regard it can be said as there is a place meant for everyone and every music. A Christian musician known principally as party rocker/secular event singer may not suddenly be categorized as a gospel music minister because he was heard singing some common church praise songs at the event or in his music videos. A minister is expected to minister spiritual gifts according to the dictates of the Holy Spirit.

As far as church music, praise and worship is concerned, not everything goes.

I will also recommend that there should be a principle guiding the church on what music is acceptable in line with scriptures, and all parties involved i.e. gospel music ministers, pastors and congregation must follow same.A respondent also said “I think there should be a philosophy that drives the music and songs we play in church; we are beginning to confuse music and songs with worship”

I hope this article will spark a reorientation in the minds of everyone who reads and help us take actions towards ending this epidemic. It is clear that no section is spared in the blame of this issues, we all have our different roles if we indeed desire a change perhaps a cure to this epidemic.

I have a feeling you expected to see some examples of the secular slangs/songs that are being imported into the church as you read this article, well, I had to resist the temptation too majorly because this article isn’t directed at anyone in particular.
