Spotlight: Neon Adejo – Taking Christian R&B and Afroworship to the World

There are distinct elements that define the artistry of Neon Adejo in the gospel music space. His  voice, the intimate nature of his lyrics and his unique sound that sits between contemporary R&B, soul music,  and Afro worship set him apart from other gospel artists. He is not just a worship singer with songs of praise but an artist creating his own signature musical style that speaks to people who enjoy good music and Christian community. Neon Adejo can’t be boxed. Let’s take a dive into the person, his music and more.

Spotlight: Neon Adejo - Taking Christian R&B and Afroworship to the World

Neon Adejo was born in Lagos, Nigeria with the name Neon Adejo Yunisa. He started singing at the age of thirteen before he officially entered the world of music professionally in 2014. He is one of those artists who develop slowly in terms of musical talent and conviction to communicate their faith through their music. Even though he is from Nigeria, his growing reputation internationally has made him more recognised in gospel music circles especially in the UK and elsewhere.

The interesting part about his journey is that he had his breakthrough not because of losing his musical authenticity to go for the popular sounds.

Adejo has created a unique sound that is influenced by contemporary R&B, soul, Afro-worship and contemporary gospel. His vocals are smooth and soulful and have enough dynamics to convey a message without taking away from the overall feel of the song. Whether he is delivering an intimate expression of gratitude or leading a congregation into a moment of worship, there is a recognisable character to his voice

Songwriting plays just as big a role in his uniqueness. Adejo knows how to communicate profound spiritual messages in an accessible way. His songs touch on themes of salvation, grace, faithfulness of God, thanksgiving and the believer’s relationship with Christ.

The turning point in Adejo’s career came with the release of “Eze Ebube”, a song that would eventually become one of the most recognisable contemporary Nigerian gospel recordings of its generation. Released in 2021 as part of his Songs of Gratitude EP, the song introduced a powerful expression of thanksgiving that connected with listeners far beyond its original audience.

What makes the story behind “Eze Ebube” even more remarkable is that it was born out of a deeply personal experience. In an interview with Punch Newspapers in 2023, Adejo revealed that he wrote the song following a near-death experience. It was his personal response to God’s preservation and faithfulness. Interestingly, it took almost two years after writing the song for it to gain widespread recognition.

What began as a personal expression of gratitude eventually became a worship anthem embraced by churches, worship leaders and gospel music lovers across the world.

The song’s appeal lies partly in its simplicity. Its lyrical expression, memorable melody and compelling vocal delivery make it easy for congregations to sing along, while its message gives listeners a reason to reflect on God’s goodness. It has found a place in church services, personal devotion and worship gatherings, becoming one of those songs that people instinctively turn to when expressing gratitude.

Success for Adejo in “Eze Ebube” goes beyond streaming figures and the attention the work got in the industry. Adejo also mentioned testimonies that he received from people all over regarding his song. Through this particular song, it has shown how a personal experience in one’s life through music could serve as an encouragement to millions of others.

The impact of the song was further cemented at the 16th edition of The Headies in 2023, where Adejo won Best Inspirational Single for “Eze Ebube”. The achievement was particularly significant because it placed a gospel recording firmly within one of Nigeria’s most prominent mainstream music award platforms.

The song also earned recognition at the Kingdom Achievers Awards, where Adejo received Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Spotlight Artist of the Year honours. He also received recognition at the 2023 Praise Achievement Awards in Ghana, further demonstrating the song’s reach beyond Nigeria.

However, reducing Neon Adejo’s musical journey to the success of one song would be overlooking the body of work that has continued to establish him as an artiste.

His debut album, Tell the World, released in 2020, introduced his musical direction and provided an early indication of his interest in combining contemporary gospel with soulful musical arrangements. This was followed by Songs of Gratitude in 2021, the five-track EP that housed “Eze Ebube” and helped bring his music to a wider audience.

In 2022, he released Nothing But the Gospel, a project that further explored his faith, songwriting and contemporary gospel identity. Songs such as “Grace Is Working”, “Free” and “Eze Ebube II” continued to demonstrate his ability to approach familiar Christian themes with an individual musical expression.

His 2023 release, “Breathe Upon Me (Teach Me How to Pray)”, featuring Naomi Parchment, offered another dimension to his artistry. The song leaned into intimate worship, expressing a longing for spiritual renewal and a deeper relationship with God. Its reception also contributed to his growing recognition in the United Kingdom, where his touring activities and radio exposure helped introduce his music to more listeners.

In 2024, Adejo released Emerge, a project that continued his artistic development, alongside singles including “Favorite Baby”, “Lade” and “Free”. His subsequent releases included “Aanu (Here by Mercy)”, “Chinecherem” featuring Peterson Okopi and “Water into Wine”. These recordings reinforced his willingness to explore different expressions of contemporary gospel without losing the spiritual message at the centre of his music.

His collaborations have also contributed to the breadth of his catalogue. Working with artists such as Naomi Parchment, Peterson Okopi, Queen Kel, Victor Thompson, Ty Bello and other gospel creatives, Adejo has demonstrated an understanding of musical collaboration that allows different vocal personalities and creative approaches to complement his own.

His partnership with Peterson Okopi on “Chinecherem”, for instance, brought together two recognisable voices in Nigerian gospel music. His appearance on “Abba (I Belong to You)” and other collaborative recordings further reflects his willingness to contribute to projects beyond his individual releases. These collaborations are important because they show an artiste who understands that music can grow through creative exchange and shared audiences.

A significant development in his international career came in 2025 when he entered into a partnership with American gospel label Tribl Records. The partnership represented an important opportunity to extend his music’s reach through an established international Christian music platform. Tribl’s association with contemporary worship music provided a new avenue for Adejo to connect with audiences beyond the African gospel market.

His 2025 EP, Now That I’m Found, marked another chapter in that journey. Released through Tribl Records, the five-track project continued his exploration of identity, grace, faith and the assurance found in Christ. Songs including “On Time”, “Impress”, “Up Again”, “Telling Everyone” and “He Won’t (Worship Medley)” demonstrated an artiste becoming increasingly comfortable with his musical direction while reaching for a wider international audience

In 2026, Adejo took another creative step with Sonship, a seven-track project released on March 12. The album features “Captured Me”, “Love Assurance”, “Only You”, “Lovin on Me”, “Like Me”, “For Me” and “Favorite Baby”. With its R&B-inflected arrangements and themes of identity, divine love and belonging, Sonship is a strong representation of the sound he has been developing over the years.

The project also received additional international visibility through a Spotify promotional partnership, an indication of the growing interest in his music and the possibilities for African Christian R&B within the global music market.

Beyond his solo projects, 2026 has seen him continue exploring collaborative music. His appearance on “Dios Tremendo” and “Alewi Aleshe”, alongside the “Parlour Worship Medley” featuring Victor Thompson, BBO and Promise Effiong, demonstrates that his creative activity remains varied

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about Neon Adejo is that he does not appear confined by the expectations often associated with gospel music. His artistry reflects an understanding of contemporary music culture, particularly the appeal of R&B, soul and melodic songwriting. He can create music that feels at home on a contemporary R&B playlist while maintaining a clear Christocentric message

As a Nigerian artiste now based in the United Kingdom, Adejo represents an increasingly important connection between African gospel creativity and the international Christian music community. His journey reflects the possibilities available to African artistes who are intentional about developing their sound, building their catalogues and taking their music beyond familiar markets.

It’s worthy of note that Neon for the first time will embark an 8 African tour kicking off with Uganda. More on this visit his social media handles. @neonadejo
