ARTICLE: WHAT DO WE REALLY WANT BY UNACHI SUNDAY

I’m usually wondeing what we love, to go from grace to grass or grass to grace. Do we intentionally become an enemy to ourselves? What exactly do we want? This will be a short read, however, you need to pay absolute attention to get a full grasp of what you are about to read.

Over the weekend, Nathaniel Bassey made a post on his instagram page which unfortunately has been deleted because of several unwarranted attacks and name calling for a post done without ulterior motives.

Nathaniel Bassey had posted a song powerfully ministered by the very Pst Chingtok Ishakwu titled ‘SunaYesu’ originally written by Adi Eze. In his post, he recommended the song to be ministered at his local church by the choir stating how the song had blessed him.

He had acknowledged Pst Chingtok whom he had seen ministering the song, perhaps an assumption that Pastor Chingtok authored it. Shockingly, just before the day was over hundreds of comments had flooded his page with unsolicited tags and words too distasteful to put in this article.

The trumpeter’s attention must have been called to the comments and in a bid to do the right thing, he edited the same post stating clearly that his post is a cover of an original song written by someone else. This does not in anyway infringe on the right of the author of the song.

I’m wondering if we really take time to read posts or we are just quick to crucify those who should be applauding? Lets go on, I remember at the God of Miracles album launch in Abuja earlier in the year, the author of the song met with me mentioning the song and how it’s blessing lives all over. I was really excited for him and looked forward to a global breakthrough as far as this song is concerned.
I also asked about his plans on giving the song a push towards wider coverage.I was willing to offer some consultation (music business and promotion is my core) so we agreed to have further conversation which is yet to happen until this very incidence.

When I saw the distasteful post originated from the camp of the producer of the song which in turn is being pushed by many, my thoughts was these lots are only trying to tarnish the image of another man for singing a song he didn’t take credit for as an author. I have checked various streaming platforms and I’m yet to find where the song was uploaded for sale as a cover or tagged an original composition by the man whose image they are out to destroy. The video was posted on Pastor Chingtok’s youtube page with due credit to the author.

As a music business entrepreneur, I reached out to the author first to feel his pulse perhaps offer some advice on the matter and I realised he confused as to what position to take although that in itself seem to me like pretence because in his words “the news is peddled by his fans and those who genuinely love him hence he is unable to make any counter post” but, a check on his page shows how he keeps acknowledging the negative comments being posted.

What is right infringement? When a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner

In saner climes people pay huge sums to influencers to make covers of their songs but here we have two heavyweights innocently pushing their weight behind the song because they were blessed by it and what they get in return is unwarranted smear campaign from attention seekers.

A few questions begging for answers are, whose reputation exactly is being tainted?

For a song released as far back as 2016 which is now gaining desired attention, should we be running a smear campaign against or showing gratitude to the one being instrumental for the attention the song is now getting?

How has it become a crime to sing a song, the one thing a lot of authors desire, having their songs on the lips of many?

Whether or not due credit is given on an IG post is never a reason to smear the reputation of anyone especially people with track records of integrity.

Its high time we began to learn and understand the meaning of right infringements. If you do not intend that people sing your song then you probably shouldn’t put out any record.

This would have been a better time to promote the same song (good publicity/bad publicity mechanism) but to my surprise the author would rather have people go stream his new sound. We have a lot to learn and improve upon as Christian creatives

  1. It’s funny how people pray for miracle & push it away when it finally comes. For a song done in 2016 from an artist in obscurity to be given attention by Nathaniel & Chingtok, it should send a message to the artist & his team to ride along with the favorable tide but then it is what it is.

  2. The last paragraph is enough for anybody that truly want to learn to understand

  3. It’s funny how people pray for a miracle and font recognize when it comes…. Strife really is not a thing in the Kingdom, we must do better! The Last Paragraph is wisdom for years,
